This site was started by me, Stubbs Nomore. I am a reformed recovering nail biter.
Stubbs Nomore is my Nail Biters Anonymous alias and the pen name for How to Stop Nail Biting.
Since I believe only other nail biters truly understand and can help you quit, I started Nail Biters Anonymous (NBA). It is a free-to-join supportive place where you maintain your privacy. NBA is there to help you and others like you learn to quit nail biting for good.
You already know relapses are common. That's why you have the free "Always On - Always There" Nail Biters Anonymous forum support community to help you stay strong.
Buy the book and join the NBA community. You can get all the help you'll need to quit without having to share any personal information about yourself with others on the forum.
A Little History Here
Biting my finger nails was part of my life for as long as I can remember. I could quit for a while, but I always reverted back to bad form eventually. Finally, I had enough of the embarrassment and bother or the habit. When I looked around and realized I was never going to get help that would work for me, I knew I had to do find a way do it on my own.
I started researching the Internet and bookstores for help. There is just not much on the subject. Nail biting is not an addiction, or life threatening, so there is no money to be made by researchers or drug companies. It's a behavioral problem. Somewhere, there is a malfunction in the brain, chemistry or somewhere else that is the cause.
I knew scientific research was beyond my means. I bought all the books, CDs, nasty tasting stuff that are out. Most of all of it worked to a degree. But, as I thought more about it, I realized none put me in control of the habit in a way I could put it behind me. That is, deterrents and quick fixes are not a way to permanently change or modify behavior, especially one as deeply ingrained as nail biting.
After lots of trial and error, I came up with my own solution. I let other nail biters I know try it and it worked for them. They encouraged me to write an ebook to let others know. I decided to do that, but to also start a free self-help group called Nail Biters Anonymous. It is a community forum where nail biters can come in privacy and get help from other biters. The book is titled How to Stop Nail Biting.
The thing is, if you don't bite your nails, you never can understand why anyone would do such a thing. If you do bite your nails, you wish you didn't and can't imagine why you do. I thought if anyone can help and support, offer secrets, successes, techniques, tools, products and just be there when the inevitable relapse occurs, it has to be other nail biters.
